I HAVE no connection with road haulage but I found the recent statement by the Road Haulage Association (SNJ August 30) that drivers should not use telephones, eat, read, or do other things whilst driving, highly hypocritical.
If they did not force their drivers to follow such tight schedules, perhaps they would have time to do these things whilst stationary.
One has only to see programmes on the subject on television to see that no allowance is made for delays such as heavy traffic or road closures.
Drivers are expected to be on time whatever happens.
I think that it would be a good thing that if a driver is fined for this type of offence then his employer should be fined 10 times as much.
This may make them realise the pressure their drivers are under.
