WHEN I think back to how Stroud once was in times past, I have realised that while I remember many places very clearly, the photographic record of how things used to be is patchy to say the least.

The area that was knocked down for the bus station, and subsequently the Merrywalks Centre, is an example – I remember a lane of brick-built properties behind the Ritz cinema including Tucks Bakery.

Church Lane is another example – does any photograph exist showing Audrey Butt’s dance studio? (where my parents met during the war!).

Is there a photographic record of Lewis and Hole’s foundry at Dudbridge?

We now have a whole raft of new supermarket and housing mixed developments in the pipeline on three of our historic employment sites – Redlers, Erinoid, and TH & J Daniels.

The buildings on these sites have been a familiar sight all my life – I think we need a photographic record of these so that future generations can see how things once were, and we need to get on with it before things get knocked down.
