CELEBRITY food critic Jay Rayner insists Forest Green are within 'a mushroom vol-au-vent' of promotion to the Football League for the first time in their history.
David Hockaday's meat-free team appeared on the BBC1 prime-time programme The One Show last night with resident food critic Rayner running the rule over the offerings at the club.
The film of Rayner's visit to The New Lawn in the build up to the Wrexham game was brought forward to coincide with an extended edition of The One Show featuring a special investigation into the horse-meat scandal.
One Show presenter Alex Jones said: "Well it could be argued that there has never been a better time to go vegetarian and Jay’s got the story of a whole football club that’s turned its back on meat."
The film looked at the overall green movement at the club, spoke to fans about the unique approach to food, and importantly "what do the players really think of their meat-free, pre-match meals?".
Central defender Eddie Oshodi said: "You get some vegetables that you've never heard of and you try it and realise you actually like it. The vegetable lasagne is really nice, it's awesome, it does supplement me enough (for playing)."
Rayner then interviewed manager David Hockaday about the most important thing at the football club - performance on the pitch.
Hockaday said: "When you go into the science of vegetarian food and what the players need in terms of proteins, carbs, vitimans.
"They're recovering better, they feel more energised, they give more in their performances in training."
Rayner went on to say: The meat-free matchdays don't seem to be doing Forest Green any harm, they are having a cracking season, they are within a mushroom vol au vent of promotion to the Football League for the first time in their history".
