STROUD gave a much better display on Saturday and subjected visitors Bridgend to a 5-2 Gerrard League defeat.

They did not have it all their own way, despite taking the lead through Alex Waring following a strong run by Matt Pearce down the left.

Bridgend netted parity However, Stroud's defence looked solid, Rob Dove, Rob Fynn and Matt Waite passing the ball around with precision.

The home side's midfield began to take control. Liam Tunney and Brad Mears strength on the ball and good distribution let Dan Clifford loose down the right and his searing pace and stick skills wreaked havoc in the visitors' defence.

Persistence earned Stroud a several short corners and Mears gave Stroud the lead once more with a well-struck shot.

Following the break, Stroud knew the next goal would be crucial and piled on the pressure. Good movement in the D gave Andy Hines a target and his finely judged free hit found Tim Norman who deflected it into the corner to put Stroud firmly in the driving seat.

Bridgend could offer little further resistance but Dave Cruickshank was called upon to make a couple of saves before the home team earned several more short corners.

Mears struck again to put the result beyond doubt. Good work from Steve Shipp and Jamie Batten nearly extended their lead. With the match well and truly won, Stroud were unlucky to concede a second goal but bounced right back with Dove making a weaving 50 yard driving run for the second week in a row.

His lay off was clinically despatched into the corner by Waring with seconds left on the clock to give Stroud a well-deserved victory.
