MATTHEW WITHEY could be holding Stroud's 2012 Olympic hopes if he continues to make his current running strides.

Withey, 16, has now been running for four years, after being encouraged to join Stroud A.C by Ander Russell, his current training partner.

This led to his first county schools victory. Since then Withey, a student at Marling, has matured as an athlete leading to national victories in two consecutive years.

Withey's focus has never better as he aims to win the English schools for the second time.

He said: "It's a great feeling to win and it's definitely my carer highlight."

Withey trains six times a week and admitted that his schedule is demanding.

"It's tough, especially fitting in school work, but you have to deal with it."

After his school career Withey will continue his sport.

He said: "Ultimately I would love to compete in the 2012 Olympics."

There's a long way to go, but Withey is confident in his own ability.

"I really admire Craig Mottram (Australia 5km record holder) as an athlete, and it would be great to challenge the Africans like he does."

Withey may well follow in the footsteps of Nailsworth Olympian Dan Robinson.

"Having spoken to Dan in training it's given me more confidence that I can compete at the highest level," added Withey.

The next step for Withey is the county schools cross country in Cheltenham on December 9 where he aims to win gold for the fourth time.
