GARETH RODERICK hit a century to save Gloucestershire from defeat for the second County Championship game in a row.
He followed up his match-saving maiden ton against Kent with 136 on the final day against Essex at Bristol before the teams shook hands on the draw with Gloucestershire on 355-6, 77 runs short of their target.
However, both sides really needed a win to keep their promotion hopes alive and Gloucestershire are now 48 points behind second-placed Northants with just three games left.
Number 11 batsman Craig Miles (50*) helped Gloucestershire avoid the follow-on by just four runs with his first half-century and a 78-run last wicket partnership with Graeme McCarter, while Alex Gidman hit 63 and Hamish Marshall scored 54 in their first innings total of 254, replaying to Essex's 400 all out, where Greg Smith made 177.
Gautam Gambhir scored 106 as Essex declared on 285-4 in their second innings, and although Gloucestershire got their chase off to a good start with Michael Klinger (62) and Roderick sharing 137 for the second wicket, after losing three quick wickets to fall to 306-6 it was left up to Will Gidman (16*) and Tom Smith (33*) to lead them to safety.
