Evans: We deserved a draw
Calor League Division One South and West
Shortwood United 1
SHORTWOOD co-manager John Evans felt his side deserved a draw at Merthyr, writes Jim Cunneen.
Evans said: “We didn’t deserve that – a draw was the very least we deserved. It was a great strike to win it, but it’s hard to.”
The Merthyr goals went from the strange to the sublime, while Adam Mann scored a superb goal for the Wood and James Baldwin was robbed of a goal by a questionable offside decision.
Wood made the worst start possible when a low free-kick into the box saw Tom King and Matt Bennett get in a muddle for the ball to go in off Bennett.
After 32 minutes Shortwood were justifiably level. Sam Avery found Mann with a sublime pass and Mann took the ball in his stride, beat his defender, and swerved a shot past Morris.
Shortwood were certainly the better side in the second half. The outstanding James Coates and Mark Pritchett were tight at the back and Shortwood had several half chances to score.
However, the defining moment arrived on 74 minutes. Baldwin started a run five yards behind his marker and buried the ball into the net only to be pulled back for offside.
With four minutes to go Leek pulled the plug on Shortwood to fire home.
SHORTWOOD: King, Avery, Axton (Haddock 45), Pritchett, Coates, Baldwin, Cant (Hancock 85), Parrott, Culley (Slack 70), Mann, Bennet.
