Westonbirt lacrosse player Scarlett Jones has been chosen to represent Wales.

The 15-year-old will play her first international for Wales U19 on March 28 at Newport.

She can’t wait. “I am so excited to be representing Wales. I’ve really wanted this and have been training hard.”

Scarlett joined the Under 19s a year ago and has been attending regular training camps. The centre says the camps helped her up her game and improve her technique.

“My playing has improved a lot since joining the squad. When I started I didn’t use my left hand much but now I am more confident and can easily switch back and forth between my right and left.

“In a way every training session is a trial for selection. This time I focussed on my game and tried to stand out,” she said. “As a result I am now playing my first international.”

Scarlett started playing lacrosse five years ago and plays in the school team at Westonbirt. It was the pace of the sport that attracted her.

“I love the adrenaline I get from lacrosse. It’s fast-paced and it’s exciting. Once I tried it I knew was the sport for me.”

The first international selection has now whetted Scarlett’s appetite to keep going. To keep her place and get to the Senior team.
