Millfield School Under 14 v Gloucestershire Under 14 (at Millfield), May 4 Friendly Gloucestershire U14 175-8 (45 overs)

Millfield School U14 39 all out (23.2 overs) Gloucestershire won by 136 runs

Gloucestershire Under 14s made a convincing start to the 2014 season with a 136 run win over Millfield School.

The visitors bowled their hosts out for just 39 runs having earlier posted a commanding total of 175-8 from their 45 overs.

A half-century on debut from Poulton batsman Jack Morris (51) proved the decisive contribution of the Gloucestershire innings after they had been put in to bat on a slow, low wicket.

Openers Will Helmke and Chad Trainor (both Frocester) got their side off to a solid start before Helmke nicked one behind off Diamond for 18. Ed Webb (Thornbury) hit a four first ball and looked in fine touch until a leading edge to mid-off from an Eastfield delivery brought about his downfall for 11.

Trainor and Will Sharp (Dumbleton) consolidated the innings but the scoring rate slowed under the pressure of some tight bowling from the hosts.

Trainor looked to take the attack to the opposition but became Eastfield’s second victim when was caught at cover for 18.

This brought Morris to the crease and in his first game to the county he looked like he had been part of the team for years, batting with confidence and composure.

Running hard between the wickets and punishing any wayward deliveries, Morris accelerated the scoring eventually making 51 in just 52 balls. And he was ably supported by 22 from Sharp before both players fell to the off spin of Bevan.

As Gloucestershire looked to improve the scoring rate in the final overs so wickets began to tumble on a difficult wicket to bat on. The visitors eventually finished on 175-8 with Diamond picking up 4-35.

In reply Millfield struggled to get going and were soon in trouble with both openers dismissed without scoring. First Diamond was caught at mid-on off George Stone (Hanham) before Ethan Organ (Long Ashton) clean bowled Berder.

Millfield showed some signs of resistance but were reduced to 18-3 when Organ picked up his second, trapping Matthews LBW for 5. A run put from Organ then added further misery by running out Bevan from cover point for 8 with the score on 27.

From here Millfield crumbled, losing their last six wickets for just 12 runs. First change bowlers Ed Wilson (Long Ashton) (2-5) and Nick Robson (Chipping Sodbury) (2-9) ripped through the middle order before spinners Alex Allen (Thornbury (1-1) and captain Ben Parker (Winterbourne) (1-4) finished the job.

Gloucestershire coach Luke Sellers said: “This was an excellent allround performance and a really positive start to the season.

“On a difficult wicket the batsmen applied themselves well, with Jack Morris playing a particularly accomplished innings on debut.

“The bowlers all impressed, bowling really tight lines and never allowing the pressure to ease. We will face stronger opposition this season but we can take real confidence from this display.”

Gloucestershire Under 11 v Gwent Under 11 (at Cirencester CC), May 4 Friendly Gloucestershire U11 194-8 Gwent U11 67 all out Gloucestershire won by 127 runs A superb unbeaten 87 from Zach Campbell (pictured) led Gloucestershire Under 11 to an emphatic 127 run win over Gwent.

The Lechlade CC batsman top scored as his side set the Welsh county a daunting target of 195 for victory at Cirencester CC after losing the toss.

Batting first on a soft wicket, Glos lost an early wicket when Max Shepherd (Bourton Vale) was bowled for 2. This brought Campbell to the crease and in partnership with Will Naish (Frocester) the pair helped moved the scoreboard along to 40-1 before Naish fell for 16.

The home side continued to push the score along at a decent rate but their progress was interrupted by the loss of regular wickets.

But at the other end Campbell held the innings together, reaching his half-century after 26 overs. Max Trotman (Thornbury) (10) and Tom Beattie (Cirencester) (13) both played their part in supporting Campbell as Gloucestershire reached 194-8 off 40 overs. For Gwent Shahid was the pick of the bowlers, finishing with best figures 2-26 off seven overs.

In reply Gwent started strongly with captain Shahid scorning a quick fire 11 before he was the first wicket to fall to Hamdi Saleem (Downend) via a catch from Max Trotman.

Gwent were going nicely at 39-1 off 10 before a batting collapse saw them lose their last nine wickets for 38 runs.

Fuzael Ahmed (Bristol YMCA) (3-9) and Kunal Barman (2-17) were the chief destroyers supported by Louis and Kit Staley on their home ground.

The victory made it two wins from two for the under 11s who beat Millfield by 69 runs last week.

Earlier Stroud and South Glos had been reduced to 36 for 5 with Brock (2-13) and Oliver Wood (2-8) (Cirencester)the pick of the bowlers.

But a determined lower order batting performance from Stroud & South Glos saw them bat out their 30 overs. This was due in no small part to an impressive display from Ryan Collins (20) which gave his side something to defend.

In reply Cheltenham and Cotswolds got off to a good start reached 20-0 before opener Freddie Drysdale (Winchcombe) was out for 12.

A superb spell of bowling from Stroud’s Reuben Scott (3-8) brought Stroud and South Glos right back into the game before two further wickets reduced Cheltenham & Cotswold to 53 for 6.

With the match in the balance Brock and Norrie steadied the ship to see their side home with nine overs to spare.

A captain’s innings from Keynsham's Callum Westbrook (48) and 2-13 for Shirehampton bowler Harry Martin helped the visitors to a comfortable victory in their first match of the season.

After losing the toss Bristol got off to a poor start when opener Joe McKimm (Bristol YMCA) fell in the second over, having been bowled by Rob Dent (Hatherley and Redding).

But the vistors rebuilt thanks to a solid partnership of 83 between Westbrook and debutant Josh O'Hara (26) (Knowle).

Alex Carruthers (Poulton) then struck twice for the home side dismissing O’Hara and James Copeland (Claverham)for a duck to leave Bristol on 85-3.

The innings was finished off nicely by Tom Wistow (Bristol) and Harry Martin who put on a quick fire 20, to see their side to 170-8.

The pick of the Cheltenham bowlers was Carruthers who finished with 2-14 off his five overs, bowling with great control and giving little away.
