JORDAN WEAVING was crowned the 2014 Motul Motostar British champion at Silverstone on Sunday.

The Cirencester Deer Park pupil has dominated the Moto3 class of the series all season and came into the 11th and penultimate round with a 34-point lead in the standings.

Weaving, 17, needed to finish no worse than fourth overall (second in class) to clinch the title – if his main rival Joe Irving won the race – and that is just what the 17-year-old from near Stroud delivered.

Starting the race from the back of the second row didn’t hinder the South African-born Weaving as he rocketed up into third on the opening lap.

But as the race unfolded, the factory-powered Irving raced clear with Brad Ray in hot pursuit.

Weaving found himself in a battle with Honda-mounted duo Jayson Uribe and Jorel Boerboom for the vital second step on the Moto3 podium.

Neither rider was prepared to give Weaving an inch, but Boerboom painfully crashed out of the race forcing Weaving to take avoiding action.

And as the red flag came out to halt the race with a lap to go, Weaving on his KTM machine forged ahead of Uribe to secure the championship-winning placing.

Weaving said: “I’m so happy to finish that race, nerves were getting the better of me and I struggled to find my rhythm of the Friday practise. Jayson and Joel made it hard for me.

“Without the huge support of my family, who have given up so much for me to chase my dreams, I wouldn’t be in the position I am now.

“My fantastic sponsors, Burkert Fluid Systems, XpressCoffee and Shark Helmets, have all played a vital role and this championship belongs to the whole team. Thank you so much to everyone who’s helped me, both here in the UK and back when I raced in South Africa.

“Today was for Logan Wood (12-year-old who died in a motocross accident near Rochdale last week). RIP little fella.”

Chris Palmer of XpressCoffee said: “I’m not normally nervous watching racing but today was an exception.

“I’m usually happy to watch from a garage on the pit lane but I could only follow live timing for Jordan’s race from our base camp. I know what sacrifices have been made by Colin and Vanessa (Weaving) to get Jordan to this stage of his career and I’m so proud to be a part of this close-knit team and, more importantly, made to feel part of the family.

“Planning for chapter two, page one with the team and Jordan’s manager starts soon, after a well-deserved celebration at Brands Hatch, of course.”

Weaving and his Jordan Racing team can now head to the final round at Brands Hatch in two weeks’ time in cruise control.
