ALTHOUGH too young to remember David Bowie’s classic hit, Shortwood joint-boss Alex Sykes is urging his FA Cup stars to be heroes just for one-day.

The Southern League South and West club made national news last season during an epic FA Cup run which saw the Nailsworth club beat Conference outfit Aldershot Town in an an away fourth qualifying round replay before taking on Port Vale on live TV in the first round proper.

The Wood travel to Conference South outfit Bath City on Saturday in the third qualifying road after shocking Conference North side Oxford City.

Shortwood’s win against Oxford earned the Nailsworth side £4,000 in prize money and they will have the chance to net a further £7,500 when they travel to Bath Sykes, a joint boss with John Evans is relishing a tie against a Bath side who he served as a player.

“To get Bath is brilliant,” said Sykes, the former Forest Green winger.

“I know Adie Britton, manager Archie (Lee Howells) very well and coach Jimmy Rollo, who I played with at Forest Green."

Only five players remain at Meadowbank from the memorable FA Cup run last season, but Sykes hopes the new-look side can pull off a shock.

“The players have got the chance to make headlines again, a chance to be heroes for the day.”
