JONNY MAY admits a positive mental attitude is behind his change of fortunes in an England shirt as the Gloucester wing continues to stake a claim for a starring role at the 2015 World Cup, writes Daniel Ross.

After going scoreless in his first seven England games, May broke his duck in sensational fashion with a solo try against the world champion All Blacks after just three minutes on November 8.

And although he was denied a score next time out against South Africa, two tries on Saturday as Samoa were put to the sword 28-9 means May has three tries in as many games this autumn.

His try-scoring exploits couldn’t come at a better time with the World Cup on home soil now less than a year away.

But the 24-year-old insists there is nothing new to his game that has brought about his change of fortunes, save for increased self-belief.

“Nothing’s changed personally, I just keep working really hard week by week,” said May, who is from Chiseldon in Wiltshire and played his junior rugby at Wootton Bassett RFC.

“The more I’m around this environment the more familiar I become with it and the more confidence I get, which is always good for me.

“Even though the New Zealand tour didn’t necessarily go my way in terms of selection I felt that from the Six Nations to the tour I’d improved and was happier, even though it didn’t necessarily go my way.

“I took confidence from my try against the All Blacks and I needed that to prove myself.

“I think as a winger I needed to come into the game and show what I could do, I feel like I have and that’s a bit of pressure off.

“That’s a good thing as well – I can just go out there and play my game rather than feeling under pressure and trying too hard.”

While England head coach Stuart Lancaster has chopped and changed this autumn, May has been a consistent fixture on the wing.

However, he is not about to get ahead of himself and he admits there is still plenty to improve on as Australia visit Twickenham this weekend in the final autumn international.

“We are frustrated but not disappointed that we couldn’t add to the scoreboard (against Samoa),” he added.

“We’ve got out there with the right intent as opposed to the week before but we know that we can build on it and there’s still tries out there.

“We’re a good group and we’ll be honest with ourselves and switch focus to Australia pretty quickly, because they’re a great team with great players. We’ll have to be on top of our game.”
