Wycliffe student Amelia Henley smashed every player put in her court to retain her national title at the British Junior Squash Championships.

The British U17s national champion was one of four players from the Stonehouse school to make their mark, with three boys reaching the quarter finals.

Coach Jonny Harford said: “Amelia was in a class of her own throughout the girls’ U17 age group, convincingly beating everyone that was put in her way.

“In the final she came up against the number two in England in her age group. Whilst it was competitive to start with, Amelia soon showed her strength and pulled away to retain her national title.”

The Year 12 sportswoman comes from a squash-loving family, with her mother, father and brothers all enjoying the sport. She started playing at the age of eight.

She stole the show bringing Wycliffe its first individual national title for a number of years.

“This title is credit to Amelia’s work rate and attitude in training,” said Harford.

“She is always looking to learn and improve and has been a really good member of the squad, having a positive influence on others around her.”

Meanwhile, the boys' U15s of the Manchester-based tournament, Wycliffe entered three players Nathan Mead, Jack Newey and Jared Carter all of whom reached the quarter finals. Jared went on to reach the final before narrowly losing out to the number one in England.

“This was probably Wycliffe’s best ever showing in a national age group event,” added Harford.

“With the squad of players we have currently, hopefully these achievements can be added to in the coming years. It really is an exciting time for Wycliffe squash.”
