ALEX Sykes insists play-off chasing Shortwood United have made a 'statement of intent' after bagging a pre-Christmas present in the shape of defender Andy Lewis from Yate Town.

Lewis,23, who was subject of an approach from former club Cinderford Town, is set to make his debut in the Boxing Day Southern League and South West holiday home fixture against Larkhall.

His signing will negate the loss of captain Ash Thomas, who moves to America on Christmas Day.

“Signing Andy is a statement of intent from both parties and myself and Evo (John Evans) are really pleased to get him,” said joint-manager Sykes.

The Gloucester-based primary school teacher started his career as a striker and will take his place at the heart of the Shortwood defence alongside Jake Lee.

Sykes added: “Andy has a lot of quality and can play a bit and to sign him from our play-off rivals Yate is a real coup for us.”

Sixth –placed Shortwood begin a busy holiday period with the visit of in-form Larkhall Athletic on Boxing Day, and trips to Cinderford Town on New Year’s Day and Tiverton Town on January 3.

Shortwood are nearing full-strength, but will be without Josh Egan (hamstring) and Matt Bennett, who is on a skiing holiday.

“We have a great squad now and have competition in all places. We’re in a good place in that pack behind the play-offs so we’re quite buoyant,” said Sykes.
