FORMER Forest Green captain Jared Hodgkiss is hoping for a warm reception when he returns to the New Lawn with his new side Kidderminster Harriers on Boxing Day (1pm).

A firm fans’ favourite Hodgkiss,27, was offered an extension, only to be released by manager Ady Pennock after the final game of the Skrill Premier season after failing to secure a guarantee of first-team football.

Signed by former boss David Hockaday, the former West Brom right-back made 164 Conference Premier appearances in five seasons for the Nailsworth outfit.

Hodgkiss said:“ I had five good seasons at Forest Green and we should have done better as a team, but I am looking forward to seeing a few old faces. I will clap the fans and I hope to get a good reception.”

Hodgkiss was saddened to leave Forest Green but the Cannock-based defender is more than happy at Kiddy.

“I was disappointed to leave, but things happen for a reason and it was probably the right time to happen.”

Hodgkiss feels his current side will challenge for the play-offs with Forest Green.

“Forest Green are a little bit inconsistent, like ourselves. I don’t think the league is as strong this season, and if you put back-to-back wins together, you can really get amongst the teams at the top.”

The likeable Hodgkiss made national headlines earlier in the season when he apologised on air to BBC Hereford & Worcester's listeners while the game was still going on after being sent off for the first time in his career against Aldershot Town.

He said: "I just want to say sorry to the fans, the players and staff."
