LEE Hughes’ career at Forest Green is in limbo.

The one-time £5million Premier League striker is understood to be training away from the club and was spotted at Kidderminster’s 2-0 home loss to Macclesfield on Saturday.

The SNJ contacted the former West Brom striker this week, but he declined to comment on the situation.

Rovers rebuffed an approach from Bristol Rovers for the veteran striker in November, but are believed to be interested in doing business with Kidderminster boss Gary Whild, who said: “No disrespect to Forest Green because I don’t like to talk about somebody else’s player, but Lee he is a local lad and started his career at Harriers and he’d be keen to come back and that would be a god send.”

The one stumbling block may be money, as Harriers could not afford Hughes’ reportedly hefty wages in full and have now signed former Forest Green striker Danny Wright from Gateshead.

However, the hitman’s presence at Aggborough suggests he is keen for a return on loan if the clubs can work out a deal.

Rovers manager Ady Pennock opted not to discuss Hughes’ link with Kidderminster, but said: “Lee has been poorly but there may be a little bit more information about him this week.”

Hughes began his career in the Conference with Kidderminster before joining his boyhood heroes West Bromwich Albion in August 1997.

He was the Baggies’ top scorer for four seasons running and moved to Coventry City for £5 million in August 2001, only to return to the Hawthorns 12 months later.

He joined Forest Green last year from Port Vale, and he scored eight goals in 21 appearances last season and seven during the current campaign, but he has fallen behind Jon Parkin, Kurtis Guthrie and Stuart Fleetwood in the striking pecking order.
