ZARA Phillips was forced to withdraw from the Rolex Kentucky Horse Trials last week following an injury to her mount High Kingdom.

Phillips was making her debut at the American classic with Trevor Hemmings’ horse, on whom she played an important role in the British team’s silver medal at last year’s World Equestrian Games.

High Kingdom had to be withdrawn from the event just before starting the dressage stage, following a cut to its leg.

The horse kicked out in his stable whilst being tacked up and split the skin off his hind, an injury that required stitches.

After being taken out for the warm-up it became clear that High Kingdom would not be able to compete at its best.

It was subsequently decided it was in the horse’s best interests for it to be withdrawn.

The withdrawal came as a disappointment to Phillips as the horse went into the Kentucky three day event with good form.

High Kingdom was also entered for the Badminton Horse Trials (May 7-10) as a backup for Kentucky and has not yet been withdrawn.

The horse arrived home on Tuesday and its wounds are being assessed before a final commitment on Badminton is made.
