ASHTON KEYNES' U10 team enjoyed a successful run at the Gloucester Girls League's end-of-season tournament in Bristol, unluckily missing out on a place in the final.
Narrow victories against Tewkesbury and Cheltenham, plus comfortable wins against Highnam, Dursley and Quedgeley, meant that the girls required just a draw in the last round-robin game against Gloucester City to go through to the final where they would have faced an unbeaten Abbeymead team.
The game was heading for a 1-1 draw until the ball came out of a melee near the AK goal to an unmarked Gloucester attacker who slotted home for 2-1.
That meant that three teams – Gloucester, Cheltenham and AK – had equal records of five wins and two losses.
Gloucester pipped Ashton Keynes to the final place with a goal difference which was just one better – and soundly beat a weary Abbeymead in the decider.
Stand-out performers for Ashton Keynes were Kirsten Powell in attack, Amelia Dudding in midfield and Neve Johnson in defence.
New players are always welcome. See www.akyfc.co.uk for details.
