STRIKER Aaron O’Connor is setting his sights on firing his new club Forest Green into League Two.

Boss Ady Pennock has made the former Newport County hot-shot his marquee summer signing.

County’s top scorer in two of his three seasons at Rodney Parade, he helped his side to a top ten finish in League Two last season.

Released by new County boss Terry Butcher last month, Pennock fought-off a raft of suitors to land the 31 –year-old on a one-year deal with undisclosed improvements for a second term.

He follows former County captain Darren Jones, who joined Rovers last month.

“It’s a pleasure to be here. I’ve weighed up a lot of offers, but felt this was the right move,” said O’Connor.

“The club’s not a million miles away from getting out of this league. I’ve come here to try and help them do that.

“The club are moving in the right direction, and hopefully this time next year we will be in League Two.”

O’Connor has had a nomadic club career, playing for 10 sides prior to his move to Forest Green, including Scunthorpe United, Rushden & Diamonds, and Luton Town.

His move will also see him renew acquaintances with former Newport team-mate David Pipe.

He added: “It will be nice to team-up with Pipey (David Pipe) and Jonah (Darren Jones) and we will car share from Cardiff.

“Pipey and Jonah are winners and that was another factor on my decision to sign.”

O’Connor insists he can help inspire a Rovers side who were comfortably beaten by Bristol Rovers in the play-offs last term.

“Ady (Pennock) felt his side froze a bit in the play-offs and didn’t play as well as they did in leading up to the play-offs, so I hope my experience will help.

“The new gaffer has filled me with confidence.

“He has got the same kind of ambitions and wants to get out of this league and has told me about everything that has been put in place to give this club the best possible chance along with the chairman and himself.”

O’Connor is relishing the chance of playing alongside 30-goal striker Jon Parkin.

“It seemed Jon (Parkin) was scoring on his own, but if we can all contribute, we won’t be far- off.

“For a manager, it’s lovely when you can get a strike-partnership with both players complimenting each other.”

Pennock added: “Aaron will add strength to the squad - I am delighted to get him on board.”
