FOREST Green Rovers and Star Anise cafe have the key ingredients for a recipe for success.

Manager Ady Pennock guided the National League outfit to the top of the table on Saturday and now the team off the pitch are serving healthy vegetarian options for fans.

Traditional football grub - red meat and even Bovril is off the menu as chairman Dale Vince changes the eating habits of the typical supporter.

Vince said: “Food is a really important issue for us – it’s a big environmental and sustainability issue, and it’s a frontier we’ve been exploring for a few years now.

“We started by removing red meat from the menu, then going vegetarian, and now we’ve teamed up with Nick Allan and his team from Star Anise Cafe in Stroud – it’s another big step, bringing better food to football.

“The star of the new line-up is the new Q-Pie – it’s handmade in Stroud and Quorn is the magic ingredient; Quorn is great to add to the mix – it’s a healthy alternative to meat, high in protein and fibre, and low in fat.”

Quorn’s Alex Glen said: “It’s great to be working with Rovers on fantastic tasting Quorn vegan options, and we’re really excited to see vegan food being enjoyed by athletes and fans alike.

“At Quorn we’re working hard on the launch of a vegan range of products that should be on supermarket shelves by October of this year.”

Since taking over the club, Vince introduced: An organic pitch - the first in the world - which is spread with cow manure and 180 solar panels which generated 10% of the electricity at the New Lawn.

Last month plans were announced to move to a £100m development, dubbed ‘Eco Park’, near Eastington.
