GLOUCESTERSHIRE remain in contention for an LV= County Championships second division top three finish after their match with Surrey was abandoned as a draw on Monday.
Not a ball was possible as the covers stayed firmly on the County Ground square on both Sunday and Monday.
Gloucestershire were largely outplayed by Surrey as the visitors were due to resume on 349-6, leading by 116 runs in their first innings.
The home county scored 233 when batting first, with Gareth Roderick at number three top scoring with 71 before he was caught by Gary Wilson off the bowling of Tom Curran.
Tom Smith and James Fuller added contributions of 47 and 48 respectively lower down the order and bowler David Payne chipped in with 21.
But the rest of Gloucestershire’s batting was dismal with five players failing to get into double figures as Curran hit them with 6-61 in his 25 overs.
And Surrey, who have secured 11 points to keep the pressure on leaders Lancashire, gave the home bowling a good thrash during their response.
Ben Foakes, at number four, remained unbeaten on 140 when the match was finally called off, while number three Sam Curran was caught by David Payne off the bowling of Kieran Noema-Barnett for 49.
Noema-Barnett also collected the wicket of Jason Roy for 39 while Liam Norwell was grateful to a catch by Roderick to dismiss opener Arun Harianth also for 39.
Noema-Barnett was the best of the home bowling as he finished on 2-35 off his 15 overs that included five maidens.
Norwell’s couple of wickets were, though, at a cost of 97 runs from 23 overs, while Payne struggled through 16 overs without a wicket while conceding 72 runs, and fellow paceman James Fuller was also without a victim in his 24 overs for 64 runs.
Gloucestershire now travel to Grace Road on Tuesday for a clash with Leicestershire and, with only three matches of the Championship left, head coach Richard Dawson will certainly be looking for improvement to end the season on something of a positive note.
