FORMER Premier League star Darren Carter is training with Forest Green Rovers.

The 31-year-old midfielder is currently a free agent after leaving Northampton Town in the summer.

A former England youth internationaL, Carter shot to stardom when he scored the penalty which put Birmingham into the Premier League in 2002.

Forest Green boss Ady Pennock is currently mulling over a move for the ex-West Brom man, who also enjoyed a productive spell under former Cheltenham Town boss Mark Yates.

Pennock said: “Darren has been training with us for a fortnight and has played in a couple of behind closed doors games.”

With midfielder Sam Wedgbury one booking away from a suspension, Pennock could had the former Premier League ace a deal ahead of the upcoming clash against Carter’s former club Cheltenham Town on Tuesday.

Pennock added: “Darren is obviously a quality player with bags of experience and we will continue to monitoring the situation."

Carter spent four seasons with Birmingham which included a loan spells at Sunderland and Millwall, after coming through the youth system at St Andrews.

He switched to West Brom in a £1.5 million deal in 2005 and was sold to Preston North End two years later for £1.25 million

He endured a difficult 2011-12 season, being forced to spend a year out of the game after tearing his groin muscle during a trial at Nottingham Forest.

He then joined Cheltenham on a six-month contract in 2012 and signed for Northampton a year later.
