Captain & Vice Captain Tankards

THIS year it was the turn of Cirencester GC to host the prestigious annual Captain & Vice Captain Tankards competition which has been played for many years between the clubs of Broadway, Cirencester, Cotswold Hills, Lilley Brook, Minchinhampton, Painswick, Stinchcombe Hill and Ross-on-Wye.

A glorious sunny day greeted the competitors on Friday, September 25 and the course was in excellent condition.

The competition consists of the combined scores from a morning nine-hole stableford greensome and a four ball better ball stableford competition in the afternoon.

Despite a gallant effort, the host club failed to lift the tankards, that honour falling to Brendon Nunan and Martin Taylor representing Painswick GC who scored a magnificent total of 43 points in the afternoon to storm through the field.

A convivial dinner at the club was enjoyed by all to round off an excellent day.

Busby Cup

THE Busby Cup, open to all past and present members of the B team, attracted a large field on Saturday.

It was no surprise that the current B team squad featured strongly in the list of prize winners.

The overall winner was Nigel Curtis with an excellent 41 points just defeating current B team captain Jonathan Wells who also scored well with 40 points, and for whom victory would have been a fitting finale given all his hard work this season.

Chris Berens finished third with 38 points. Brian Kelly and Jonathan Wells both finished with a best-of-the-day gross 78, the latter losing out again on countback.

I H Smith Foursomes

THE I H Smith Foursomes, one of the last major competitions of the season, was played on Sunday.

In sunny, tranquil conditions, it was not surprising that scoring was extremely good.

The net 62 returned by Neil Herbert and former exile John Lovatt turned out to be by far the best return of the day.

Low handicappers Duncan Barnes and Peter Stone did well to chase them down with a net 65 but failed to earn yet another trophy to add to their vast haul at the club and had to settle for second place.

Andy Bell and Sam Brisland finished third with a net 70.

By way of consolation, Barnes and Stone had the best gross score of the day with their 72.

Cirencester Mixed 4

Wrag Barn 2

CIRENCESTER members gained a memorable 4&2 victory over Wrag Barn in this annual mixed match.

First past the winning post was the popular John Morris partnered by Julie Clough, who raced to a 5&3 win.

Second home was the team of David Michael and Sue Hodgson. David, as usual, took time over his putts but this eventually paid off with a solid half.

Jim & Dorothy Donovan followed up with a half in their match.

Next to come in were James and Katie Leith who after an epic up-and-down match just lost out.

Finally, the mixed match organiser Keith Hodgson offered himself up as back-up to play a Wrag Barn pair on his own – and won 5&4.

Congratulations to the Cirencester mixed team who were posting their first win of 2015.

Hopefully, they can continue in this vein with two more matches to play.
