Wimborne Town 1

Shortwood United 4

By Jim Cunneen

WILL Morford's brace saw Shortwood United emphatically end their four-game Southern League South and West Division losing sequence at Wimborne Town.

The Nailsworth side, who welcome Swindon Supermarine to Meadowbank on Tuesday night, returned to the kind of form that had previously seen them anchored in the play-offs and this result certainly ticked the right boxes for co-manager Alex Sykes.

"I’m very pleased with this convincing win," said Sykes. "We scored some quality goals and defended very well.”

Earlier, Wood had a scare when Matt Bennett carelessly lost possession and Tom King had to parry Clarke’s shot.

However, Shortwood took control. After 11 minutes Jake Lee knocked the ball down to James Singh and although Harvell saved Singh’s shot, Morford was on hand to sweep the ball home.

After 34 minutes Wood scored the second they richly deserved. A long ball from Andy Lewis found Singh, who raced through and as Harvell came out he slid in Morford for his second of the match.

Shortwood made it 3-0 just after the break. On loan winger Ross Staley crossed low and Singh slid in at the far post.

However, Wimborne responded with a quality goal of their own. Preston turned and sent over a fine cross, which was met perfectly by the head of Morgan-Turner.

Shortwood were not fazed and played some terrific football and Harvell came into his own making several first class saves – saving with his feet to deny Lee, twice. He then came out to block a Singh run.

Nonetheless, he was powerless to stop the Wood scoring their fourth in the dying minutes.

Marley Thomas beat his marker, crossed low and hard and Liam Meredith shot home just inside the post.

SHORTWOOD: King, Rawlings, Peare, Lewis, Bennett, Hancock, Singh (Thomas 65), Moxham, Lee, Morford (Meredith 83), Staley (Humphreys 78).

Star Man: Will Morford.
