HENRY TRINDER continued his comeback from a serious knee injury when playing for 45 minutes as Gloucester United beat Northampton Wanderers in an A-team fixture at Franklin's Gardens on Monday night.

In difficult conditions, Gloucester’s Billy Burns outkicked his counterpart Sam Olver by four penalties to two for a winning scoreline of 12-6, although the fly half ended the match in the sin bin for the final minute as the visitors saw out victory.

It means that Gloucester United have won both their matches this season following the victory over Leicester at Welford Road last Monday.

Trinder, who captained the side, looked very sharp during his time on the field. Both he and Mark Atkinson made good ground whenever they had possession.

The former Cirencester RFC and Kingshill player was withdrawn five minutes into the second half as his comeback to first team action is being carefully managed.

After the game, Trinder tweeted: “Good result in terrible conditions tonight against Saints in the A league. Pleasure to be Captain, boys’ defence especially was outstanding.”

Burns’ two penalties in the first half were particularly good.

He converted superbly from out wide for the first after 20 minutes. And when Wanderers’ back row Reece Marshall was penalised as the clocked ticked down in the first period, Burns dissected the post from 40 metres out.

A dogged victory then for Neil McCarthy’s side.

The Academy head, a former Cirencester RFC player himself, will have been pleased with the game time accumulated by Trinder and also the 20-minute cameo from the bench from teenager Harry Wilson.

Another ex-Cirencester RFC junior, Wilson is also part of the young England set-up.
