David Payne’s opening spell of three for 11 in seven overs gave Gloucestershire the start they wanted after taking up their option to bowl first in the Specsavers County Championship match at New Road.
On a greenish pitch, Worcestershire lost half their side for 34 in the first hour, Payne’s left-arm attack securing leg-before decisions to dismiss the openers Daryl Mitchell and Brett D’Oliveira.
Payne had Alexei Kervezee taken at second slip by Chris Dent, following a knock-up from George Hankins, and there were wickets for Liam Norwell, who accounted for Joe Clarke, also caught by Dent, and Josh Shaw, who bowled Ross Whiteley with his fourth delivery.
The collapse was halted by Tom Kohler-Cadmore with 11 boundaries in a half-century from only 57 balls. His unbroken partnership of 80 with Ben Cox (25 not out) has taken Worcestershire to 114 for five.
