Tom Kohler-Cadmore’s second century of the season in the Specsavers County Championship led Worcestershire out of trouble on the opening day against Gloucestershire at New Road.

The 21-year-old former Malvern College batsman made 103 not out in dragging his side from 34 for five to 221 for seven by tea from 64 overs.

Hitting 18 fours from 154 balls in his hundred, he shared in a stand of 155 with Ben Cox – the second time Cox has equalled the county’s sixth-wicket record against Gloucestershire this summer. The wicketkeeper was involved in a similar stand with Joe Clarke at Bristol in April.

Gloucestershire took up their option to bowl first on a greenish pitch and left-arm seamer David Payne gave them the start they wanted when taking three for 11 in seven overs.

Liam Norwell and Josh Shaw picked up the other wickets in the first hour but the visitors had to get through 39 overs before Craig Miles had Cox caught at second slip for 75.
