GWEN KINSEY retained her European AC triathlon title in Libson, Portugal.
The Stroud AC athlete produced a stunning run to peg back four rivals to grab gold in the 40-44 age category.
“It was a huge relief to win again as there was a lot of expectation that I would retain my title,” said Kinsey.
Kinsey was first out the water in the 750m swim and held off a strong field in the 20km bike section. Her Orbea Orca bike delivered her in fourth ahead of the 5km run and with a fast transition and a storming run, she reclaimed her title.
“Training had been really good leading up to the race but 10 days before I fell from my bike while practicing transitions and my foot was scraped and felt stiff.
“However, I didn't notice it in the race, but had to work hard in the run to catch the four ion front of me.
"I'm delighted and I was also the fastest female across all age groups."
Kinsey now turns her attention to the World Duathlon Championships on Saturday in Aviles, Spain.
“ This weekend will be more relaxed as the European Triathlon was my main aim. I don't know if my legs will be fully recovered, but I will give it my best shot.”
