FORMER Forest Green striker Sean Rigg has joined Newport County AFC.

The striker made more than 40 appearances for AFC Wimbledon last season as the London club was promoted to League One via the play-offs.

Rigg, 27, was released by the Dons the day after being an unused substitute in their 2-0 victory over Plymouth Argyle at Wembley Stadium.

Rigg started his career at Rovers in the youth set-up before a move to Bristol Rovers. He returned to Forest Green for a loan spell under David Hockaday.

Rigg told the South Wales Argus: "I’m delighted to have signed for Newport County AFC,” said Rigg, who can also play as a winger.

“This time of year is obviously a stressful time for players and you want to get your future sorted as soon as possible, so I'm buzzing that a deal has been agreed and now I'm looking forward to the start of pre-season.

“I took to Warren (Feeney, manager) straight away and that was a big draw in me signing.

“I was looking to get back to the South-West area, so this move ticks all the boxes for me.

"Newport County AFC is a club that is on the up, so it's an exciting time to be joining the club.”

Manager Feeney spoke of his delight at securing the signing of Rigg and believes his experience of promotion out of League Two will be a big benefit.

“Sean has got the experience of promotion from this level, so that is obviously going to be a huge benefit to us.

“I remember Sean from his time at Port Vale where he was used as a striker, but he also gives you an option out wide, which will help us tremendously.

“He has got the right mentality to succeed in this division and what I like most about him is that he is a very loyal character and I'm sure that he will be a very good addition for us.”

Rigg began his league career at close rivals Bristol Rovers, before progressing onto Port Vale and Oxford United.
