REIGNING World, European and Olympic champion Charlotte Dujardin and fellow 2012 Olympic team gold medallist Carl Hester – both based in Gloucestershire – form the basis of a strong GB dressage team heading to the Rio Olympics.

But there is no place for their London 2012 team-mate Laura Tomlinson.

However, Tomlinson's protege at her stables in Ampney St Peter near Cirencester, Lara Griffith, has been picked as the travelling reserve.

The four-strong dressage team is completed by Fiona Bigwood and Spencer Wilton, who used to have his stables near Tetbury.

Kitty King, from Stanton St Quintin in Wiltshire, makes her Olympics debut as part of the four-strong eventing squad which also features William-Fox-Pitt, Gemma Tattersall and Izzy Taylor.

Pippa Funnell is the travelling reserve.

Twenty-year-old Jessica Mendoza has just missed out on the main showjumping quartet, the selectors siding with the experience of John Whitaker (aged 60), Nick Skelton (58) and Michael Whitaker (56), along with Ben Maher (33).

But Jess, from Tockenham near Royal Wootton Bassett in Wiltshire but now based in the Netherlands has been rewarded with selection as the travelling reserve.
