Benny Howell and Josh Shaw gave Gloucestershire genuine hope on the penultimate day of their Specsavers' County Championship game against Leicestershire at Cheltenham College.

The 10th wicket pair added 48 valuable runs to bolster Gloucestershire's second innings total to 215 all out. Leicestershire needing 181 to win with five sessions of the game remaining, were 11 for 1 at lunch with Angus Robson out, first ball, caught at slip off the bowling of David Payne.

Earlier in the day, Gloucestershire, resuming their second innings on 133 for 4, found themselves in a genuine spot of trouble against the twin attack of Ben Raine and Clint Mckay.

Although Michael Klinger reached 50 off 101 balls, with seven fours, he was fifth man out, caught behind off the bowling of Raine for 54 at 155 for 5.

Jack Taylor, with whom Klinger added 55 for the fifth wicket, departed off the final ball of Raine's over and when Craig Miles and Payne followed, shortly after, Gloucestershire were 161 for 8.

Liam Norwell was bowled by McKay for 3, at 167 for 9, but with Howell (20 not out) and Shaw, who hit a career best 29, adding valuable runs for the last wicket, Gloucestershire, who bowled out league leaders Essex for 151 to win last week's game by 61 runs, were well and truly back in it.
