FIVE years after his death, footballer Nathan Smith will be remembered at a memorial tournament in Stroud.

Stroud Harriers, who organised the event, along with Stroud Reserves, Stroud United and Chalford will take part in the tournament at Mason Road playing field on Saturday, with the first semi-final starting at 12pm and the final at 3.45pm.

Memorial matches have been held annually for Nathan, 18, since he died in a car crash in 2011, but this is the first time a tournament has been held in memory of the popular young man.

There will also be a BBQ and bouncy castle for children, and afterwards a raffle and presentation will be taking place at The Fountain Inn.

Nathan, who attended Thomas Keble School, played for Golden Valley Rangers (GVR) throughout much of his youth.

He started in the under 8s team and stayed until the under 15s.

He also played for Forest Green Rovers under 14s, Stroud Town FC under 16s to under 18s and Stonehouse Town under 18s.

He was one of three boys from the area that got picked from many hopefuls to try out for the Bristol Rovers Academy.

His passion was Chelsea and captain John Terry paid a tribute to him when news broke of his death.
