Forest Green Ladies have withdrawn from the Women's Premier League.

The club were competing at the highest level in their history in the Premier League Southern Division last season along with the likes of Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham.

Rovers  were set to begin their campaign at Coventry City on August 28 but the committee made the decision that they can't continue after a mass exodus of players over the summer.

They are now hoping to re-join the South West Women's Football League.

A club statement said: "Following the departure of key players over the summer and several players leaving in the last few weeks the squad available would have been very young and not as competitive at such a high level of football.

"We have a duty of care not to expose them to that environment at that age, for what could be very harmful to their development both physically and mentally.

"We are currently in talks with the South West Women's Football League and the early signs are encouraging."
