Upton Ladies 53

Park Ladies 35

UPTON negated a tough challenge against Park in Division One.

Upton took an early four-goal lead. Upton’s mid-court of Jess Hamilton-Webb and Charly Ammabel linked well in attack to find the circle edge, while shooters, Amy Davies and Charlotte Eley had to use all their experience and skill to maintain disciple and accuracy as they were put under severe pressure in the circle by Park’s physical defenders.

At the other end Upton’s defence were working hard too. Nikkie Smith and Amy Darkin worked tirelessly against Parks experienced shooters, regularly forcing them to shoot from distance and winning many of the rebounds.

Sally Beard at wing defence linked the attack and defence down the court and won several clean interceptions from the Park centre pass, which Upton duly converted.

Upton made some positional changes at half time, and they welcomed Nikki Cunningham-Smith to the court at goal defence for her Ladies debut.

The third-quarter continued in the same vain, with both teams leading from the back, it was the battle of the defence.

The quarter ended 32-28 to Upton with everything still to play for.
The final quarter proved decisive for Upton as shooters Davies, and Eley found their form and began to ooze in confidence and as Hannah Preston, newly on court at wing attack, moved the ball effectively across the circle, at times leaving the Park defence standing the match began to look one sided.

The final score was a credit to the squad as they needed to dig deep at times and really believe in themselves.
