SHORTWOOD Reserves drew their second consecutive goalless draw on Saturday when they travelled to Woodstock, writes Jim Cunneen.

While they will point to a controversial disallowed goal and the fact that they hit the woodwork twice, the fact is that they created and missed enough chances to have won this game by a street and Town could have stolen the points when they missed chances of their own in a frenetic last 10 minutes.

The first half an hour was fairly even but after 30 minutes Jack Freeman struck an excellent free-kick that cannoned of the bar straight to Dave Apperley, who put the rebound over the empty net.

The introduction of Luke Benneyworth and later Will Hawes gave Shortwood more fluidity and Wood thought they had taken the lead after an hour.

Palmer sent over a corner and Dave Apperley met the ball perfectly to fire home. Bizarrely the referee disallowed the goal apparently for dangerous play. Wood pushed forward and keeper Kemp parried Nick Humphreys low shot and then blocked Peyton’s follow up.

It was far from one way traffic however and as Wood pushed forward they became more susceptible to the hit on the break and Bob Humphreys had to be alert to clear the danger as Roberts shot towards the bottom corner.

Saunders then produced the save of the match to keep out a Hawes drive.

In the dying seconds Will Hawes was unlucky to see his shot rebound off the foot of the post and away.
