Shortwood United 2

Winchester City 1

By Jim Cunneen

ADAM Price hit a late winner as Shortwood grabbed the points in a Meadowbank thriller.

For Shortwood it was pleasing to see the spirit of a side, down to the bare bones, as they recovered from an early set back.

Wood suffered an early blow when in only the second minute when Karl Jenkinson's cross took at least two deflections before going in off the far post.

This setback did not deter Wood and they attacked with verve and keeper Noyce had to be on his game as Price curled one just wide, Neil Withington fired too close to him and Jake Lee fired over.

After 33 minutes Noyce made a fine double save to deny first Liam Meredith and then Zamora, but just before the break Rhys Lovett somehow denied Feeney.

Wood started the second half on the front-foot and captain Matt Bennett came within inches of levelling after Noyce flapped at a cross.

Finally, Wood netted parity after 53 minutes. Zamora showed superb skill to control a lofted ball and knocked it out wide to Meredith, who needed no second invitation and cut in before curling a shot across Noyce and into the corner.

Back came City and only a minute later Briggs cross found Feeney centre of goal with a free header. Lovett reacted brilliantly to turn it away.

With 77 minutes gone Bobby Humphreys fired the ball hard and low across the box. Lee’s effort was blocked but the ball fell to Price who joyfully smashed it home.

SHORTWOOD: Lovett, Marks (Humphreys B 65), Humphreys N, Weeks, Bennett, Withington (Freeman 60), Meredith, Mendes, Zamora (Blackah T 79), Lee, Price.

Star Man: Sam Mendes.
