Shortwood Res1

Hook Norton 2

SHORTWOOD Res narrowly lost out to high-flying Hook Norton at Meadowbank on Saturday, and the game was not without controversy, writes Paul Webb.

Boss Nick Ackland bemoaned his side’s misfortune, he said: “We should have got a point from that game. I thought we had a strong case for a penalty in the second half, but luck seems to be against us at the moment.”

Hook Norton scored almost immediately with a freakish own goal. Howkins’ curling effort rebounded back off the crossbar before hitting Lloyd Price in the midriff and going in.

Shortwood’s first chance came from a free kick wide on the left. Palmer’s cross to the back post was met by Freeman who headed against the post. Right at the end of the half Will Hawes unleashed a swirling left footed shot which brought out a fantastic save by Fox who just managed to tip it over.

Wood then grabbed the goal they deserved. Blackah’s cross to the back post was fumbled by Fox and Ajijedidun pounced from close range, toe-poking the ball home.

It was now all Wood as they pressed for an equaliser. Regula’s header from a corner flashed just over and Blackah stung Fox’s hands with a fierce low drive. However their efforts were to no avail and Hook Norton hung on.
