FRESH from witnessing Saturday’s 2-0 FA Trophy win at Chester, Ashley Loveridge looks at five things we learned from an eventful day in Cheshire.
Forest Green boss Mark Cooper staged a training ground pow-wow before the game and it worked a treat. His team showed a togetherness in a thoroughly ruthless performance.
Rovers’ ship looked unsinkable at Chester, but could have been derailed by the pre-match news of striker Kieffer Moore moving to Ipswich Town and popular winger Elliott Frear seemingly heading for a New Lawn exit. However, on this evidence the team are moving in the right direction.
Marcus Kelly proved a worthy deputy to Elliott Frear as the little magician curled in two beauties in each half.
Sam Russell’s brilliant block at the start of the second-half proved pivotal with Rovers 1-0 up. His save helped Rovers survive a shaky start before going on to win the game with another Kelly cracker.
Injured since April, Sam Wedgbury made a welcome return in the dying embers of the game. His chirpy personality will be key on and off the pitch.
