Hartpury duo grab national pentathlon podiums Hartpury modern pentathletes Seren Allin and Alex Coveney finished top of the sixth form rankings at the recent British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) Pentathlon competition.

18-year-old Allin, a Diploma Horse Management student at the college, put in a nearly flawless performance in all five competitions to finish first in the girls’ side of the draw while Coveney continued his good start to 2017 with another gold medal finish in the boys’ sixth form event.

Allin’s excellent day saw her pushed all the way by her teammate, Kara Hughes, at the event at Oxford University – with Hughes eventually finishing in second place. Coveney meanwhile swam a personal best alongside strong performances in the other events to claim the boys’ sixth form title. He finished second overall in the full event which included university students.

Coveney’s teammates Monty Podger and James Symons, both 17, put in strong performances across the board to help Hartpury to a third place finish in the boys’ team event.

Hartpury’s Head of Modern Pentathlon, Mat Dewey, said: “I’m really pleased for Alex and Seren – they both put in top drawer performances and deserved to come out on top in the sixth form event. And Alex only narrowly missed out on top spot overall, so it really was a good day. Monty and James did well to help the team to bronze as well.”
