Cheltenham & District Combination Vets 63

Stroud & District Combination Vets 39

THE Vets from both the Cheltenham & District and Stroud & District leagues put on a well-contested and highly entertaining match under the lights at the Prince of Wales Stadium in Cheltenham on Wednesday evening.

Cheltenham team had the silkier back-line but Stroud, under the captaincy of Gino Beaumont and with Andy Deacon leading the scrum, were their equals in the tighter phases of play.

The half-time score was 22-22 but the combination of Peter Buxton, Gethin Evans and Matt Mudway helped the home side to a strong opening second half and an eventual 63-39 win.

Forty one vets (over 35) played in the game which boasted 18 tries and was well refereed by Simon Collyer-Bristow.

The oldest participant was 61 years of age. Whoever said “It’s time to hang up your boots?” A big thank you to all those involved in the organisation of the game and most notably Mark Spreadbury of Smiths RFC, Malcolm Kedward and Dave Randall from Cheltenham Combination and Stroud Combination’s Stephen Knight and Gino Beaumont.
