Shortwood United 1

Swindon Supermarine 0

AFTER parting company with boss Alex Sykes in the week, coach Andy Hoskins credited Shortwood's first win in six to the former boss.

“This win was for Alex Sykes and the club, " said Hoskins. "We knew we could do it – we had a game plan and stuck to it. Everyone put in a great shift and we deserved it. I don’t want to single out anyone today because this was a great team performance.”

Swindon Supermarine, who are chasing the play-offs,had three good chances in that opening period and Josh Parsons chipped over Langley and the bar, volleyed over from 10 yards, and had a shot blocked by Matt Bennett.

It was far from one-way traffic, however, as Wood pushed forward too and Jack Freeman forced Johns into a sprawling save and Nick Peare had a volley deflected inches wide. Chris Whittington fired a good chance just over and Will Morford got his head to another Withington cross but was denied by a fine save by Johns.

Wood were desperately unlucky not to take the lead just two minutes into the second-half.

Davies robbed a defender and a nice interplay between him and Will Morford gave Davies the chance to cross. Morford’s resultant header rebounded off the bar and Chris Withington’s follow up was blocked on the line.

Wood were in control and Davies almost put Morford in. The goal Wood richly deserved came after 72 minutes. A lovely move saw Davies cut through the defence and lay the ball across the six yard box and Morford running in had the simplest of finishes. It was only in added time that Langley was called into action but saved comfortably from Waldon.

SHORTWOOD: Langley, Withington, Bennett, Lewis (Low 61), Peare (Mendes 80), Hancock, Davies (Meredith 75), Humphreys N, Freeman, Price, Morford
