We could not beat North Ferriby because the team we had was shot, now we head to the play-offs with clean sheets.

What a transformation we have seen at the New Lawn. After the dismal display against the Yorkshire side, manager Mark is quite clear about what he wanted, a determined set of players who wanted to play for Forest Green and would give their all for the cause were needed to take us to the play-offs and beyond. Recent results show he could have found one!

We have a young side, but one with height at the back and pace up front.

Some of the players are very much ‘works in progress’ but, working for each other, they all contribute. The experience of Mark Ellis moulds the back three, while the height of Manny Monthe and Curtis Tilt diminish the aerial threat.

Sam Russell, catching and punching with good judgement is back to his best and Dale Bennett and Dan Wishart fit well into their roles of wing-backs. Three clean sheets in our last three games is no coincidence.

Drissa Traore and Charlie Cooper combine increasingly well in midfield while Woolery and Bugiel have the pace and energy to compliment Christian “Dead Shot” Doidge.

We saw on Saturday how this team is growing in confidence and stature, with Noble and Kelly waiting in the wings it was all too much for Chester. Woolery turning quickly and running at the defence had a fine game, as did Omar Bugiel, who was everywhere.

The two goals we scored were the result of quick incisive forward movements, clearly a “couple of swells.”

It was marvellous to see captain Liam, back on the field using his experience and composure to score the second.

In building this team there may have been some experienced casualties on the way but Mark has got the team going again.

Let us hope that when the season is over we shall be all in clover and we will be the proudest fellas in the promotion parade. With apologies to Irving Berlin!
