NEW ZEALAND comfortably beat Sri Lanka in their opening Women’s World Cup clash on Saturday at Bristol’s Brightside Ground.

The Kiwis won the toss and put Sri Lanka into bat. The Sri Lankans made a good start but, once their top three were dismissed for 31, 49 and 53 respectively, their innings collapsed.

They were on 141-2 after 35 overs but lost their last six wickets for only 36 runs, with the extras contributing 12.

They ended on 188-9 in their fifty overs with New Zealand’s Holly Huddleston taking 5-35.

In reply, New Zealand found it easy to pass the Sri Lankan total. Opener and wicket-keeper Rachel Priest was the only batter out during the innings when she fell for two with the total on 19-1.

That put skipper Suzie Bates and Amy Watterthwaite together and, between them, they made Sri Lanka toil in the field.

Bates hit 106 not out and Satterthwaite scored 78 as New Zealand reached 189-1 after 37.4 overs.
