NAILSWORTH Lawn Tennis Club stalwart Mark Peer has netted a top gong.
Peer, chairman of Nailsworth Lawn Tennis Club, picked up the GLTA Special Achievement award.
Back in 1989, he recognised an opportunity to form a tennis club in Nailsworth, as no club existed in the town at the time. Some derelict land was identified as a potential site.
After lengthy negotiations two tennis courts were built on the land and 21-year lease was agreed. The development project involved applications to the LTA and other local sources for grant funding and a working party/committee of local tennis players was formed. Peer even put up some of his own money to get the project started.
The new club was formed and Peer was appointed chairman and has been in that role 28 years. NLTC has grown into a very successful club within the county, with teams in many divisions. One highlight was the men’s team winning the Premiership.
The club now has three floodlit courts and boasts a healthy adult membership and more than 60 juniors members.
