New signing Cameron Belford says the chance to join Forest Green Rovers was an opportunity he couldn’t pass by.

Goalkeeper Belford has joined on a deal until the end of the season following his release from Scottish League One side Stranraer, where he had been for the last year-and-a-half.

The 29-year-old links back up with former manager Mark Cooper, who he played under on loan at Tamworth and also at Swindon Town.

Goalkeeping is certainly in the Belford family genes. His father Dale started his career with Aston Villa and currently manages Hinkley. Younger sibling Tyrell is a former Swindon Town and Liverpool stopper, who recently joined Swindon Supermarine.

“It’s happened quite quickly but I’m very happy to be here,” he said after becoming the club’s eighth signing of the window.

“I know what the gaffer is about and I also worked with Scott (Lindsey) at Tamworth and I know what they demand from the players and I’m really looking forward to it.

“I’ve played a good amount of games at Stranraer in the last two years but to move down here was a big decision but an opportunity I couldn’t pass by.

“It’s a good opportunity for me to get back into the Football League in England and back into the swing of things and give it aright go.

“I know what this league is about, I’ve played a good few games in this league. When I was at Bury we won promotion from this league and I’ve played for Southend and Accrington.

“I know what is required from people and I’m just looking forward to getting going now.”

Belford will not be eligible to play in tomorrow’s game with Carlisle United but says he is keen to come in and work hard with the existing group of goalkeepers and new coach Pat Mountain to see how he can play an impact for the remainder of the campaign.

“It’s a good challenge,” he added.

“There is a lot of quality here in the goalkeeping department.

“I played against Sam (Russell) a lot of times and he is a top keeper at this level and played very well last year in the National League.

“I’ve seen bits of Harry (Pickering) and Brad (Collins) and I know what they are about as well, so it is going to be exciting times.

“I’m coming in here to work hard and see where we end up.”

Belford’s move is subject to international clearance and league approval.
