NEWPORT County AFC manager Michael Flynn was delighted by his side's return to form at Rodney Parade as they claimed a full deserved three points against League Two leaders Accrington Stanley.

A first-half goal from Padraig Amond, against his former club, and a late strike from Frank Nouble sealed the win.

Stanley pulled one back in the 90th minute through top scorer Billy Kee but they couldn't claim the point they needed to be crowned champions in the Newport rain.

"I thought we were excellent," said Flynn. "It was a slow start but we grew into the game and we should have scored more and been a lot more comfortable.

"I'm still waiting to win a game without my blood pressure going through the ceiling.

"I've never given the instructions to sit back - if you do this against a team like this you're asking for trouble. They'll win the league, 100 per cent, but I'm just glad they didn't win it here.

"I thought Padraig Amond was the best player on the park, he was absolutely outstanding and a pleasure to watch. There were a lot of good performances but he was the stand out."

South Wales Argus:

Accrington boss John Coleman was disappointed not to clinch the title as his side, already assured of a place in League One next season, lost for the first time in 16 matches.

“It’s something we’re not used to," said the Stanley manager. "For a long while we’ve been superb but we didn’t turn up in the first-half and they were comfortably better than us. That’s where the damage was done.

“We had to throw caution to the wind second-half and we had 25 minutes where we absolutely battered them, keeper’s made a save he didn’t know much about and Mark Hughes has hit the inside of the post.

“I feel sorry for those who made the trip and wanted a party, but when you come to places like this they’re not going to want to let you party in their back garden. For how we played in the first-half we got what we deserved.”
