GLOUCESTERSHIRE head coach Richard Dawson said giving away 'soft dismissals' cost his side as they went down to One-Day Cup defeat against Surrey at the Oval on Wednesday night.

Gloucestershire made 282-6 in their knock, with Benny Howell and Jack Taylor both hitting half-centuries.

But a big ton from teenager Will Jacks plus to other half-centuries saw Surrey to their target as they notched up 286-4.

Dawson said: "You only know what's a good score once both sides have batted, but we were on the the receiving end of a great knock by Jacks and I felt we gifted them a number of soft dismissals.

"With the ball, I don't think we made it hard enough to score boundaries at no stage did we build pressure and that ultimately cost us."

It was Gloucestershire's first One-Day Cup defeat in their opening group games over the course of the week and puts them fifth in their group.

Gloucestershire have a chance to quickly make up for the loss when they play Hampshire at the Brightside Ground, Bristol, on Friday.
