STROUD Athletic Club star Tom Mortimer has been selected for the Great Britain U20 team for the Manchester International.

The competition takes place on Wednesday, August 15 and will see Tom compete in the 10,000 metres.

Tom's coach Chris Brown hopes the athlete can make a full recover from a slight injury in and was surprised to see him selected for that event.

He said “We are pleased but a little surprised, Tom made it clear that not only that he not raced this distance plus he had injured his ankle in the World U20 5000m race on in July.

Tom has not been able to train since but is now able to do gentle jogs and is making rapid progress, but that was sufficient for the selectors. It will be more experience for Tom and if we can get full movement in his ankle it will be interesting to see what he can do over this new distance”

Tom will be the only junior in the race which will incorporate the English senior men championships race in with the International team competition with teams from Scotland, Wales, Iceland, and a combined team from NI Ireland & Ulser, plus a team selected from the British athletic leagues and guest internationals.
