Reuben Reid feels Forest Green need to be smarter in the final third to ensure they don’t let two points slip from their grasp.

The striker scored the goal that gave Rovers the lead in the first half against Oldham Athletic which ended in frustration.

Mark Cooper’s side were dominant and were unfortunate not to come away with the win, but Reid feels the players must look at themselves for not scoring the second goal.

“I think it’s our problem,” said Reid. “I think we’ve got to be smarter and cleaner in what we do. When we’re laying people on, don’t let it get cut out or can we tee someone up nicely so on our part we weren’t sharp and decisive enough to get the second.

“We had little bits in and around the box, I had a shot where everyone piled in and it just wouldn’t fall for someone to slide in and it was one of those games where we couldn’t get the second goal to kill it off.

“I’m a firm believer in two goals in any game of football. As you can tell, a little bit of madness we conceded a penalty so if you get your second goal it kind of kills their spirit so even if you’re 1-0 up you’re never comfortable.

“Maybe away from home against Oldham, 1-0 up sometimes it’s a backs against the wall job but in this game they had their spirits up because they came in the second half quite nicely so we needed to be more decisive to win the game.”

Reid scored just after 20 minutes against his former club with a lovely finish just outside the box but he revealed it was his touch which allowed him to finish so beautifully.

“With the conditions, the touch was better than the shot,” explained Reid. “It opened up everything and took my marker completely out of the game. I knew if I hit it well enough, even if it went close to the keeper with the conditions I knew if I hit it well it was going to fly past him, it went in the corner a bit more than it needed.”

Rovers have made an unbeaten start with four points from a possible six and are yet to concede from open play and the former Exeter City man feels the team are making good progress.

He said: “We’ve made massive strides during my time at the club. We’ve got some good personnel this year and we had a good bedding in period with all the lads and I think in the two games it should have been six points so it’s very positive.”
