Christian Doidge has joined Bolton Wanderers on an initial loan before the move will be made permanent in January.

The striker will leave Forest Green for a club record seven figure fee.

Dale Vince, Chairman, Forest Green Rovers, said: “I’m really grateful to Christian – for all his time here and his incredible loyalty.

“Last January he declared he was going to stay and help us beat the drop from League 2 – which he did. That felt exceptional to me at the time – you know who your true friends are when the chips are down.

“Letting Christian go today is in part about repaying that loyalty – it’s a great opportunity for him, and one he’s earned.

“We are disappointed to be losing him but at the same time it’s hard not to be excited for his future. In departing, Christian has set two club records – our top all-time goal scorer, and a transfer fee in seven figures.”

Forest Green boss Mark Cooper added: “I’ve got mixed emotions - I’m really pleased to see Christian go on, as I always said he would reach a higher level. I’m sad to see him go, but I’m pleased that he’s got his opportunity.

“When young players come to us, they’re coached, developed and are taught the game so they can go on and achieve their dreams. It’s life changing for Christian and as sad as I am to see him go, I’m really excited for him and I’m excited for the future of Forest Green.”

Doidge leaves as the club's record scorer with 56 goals from 99 matches.

His goals helped Rovers reach the EFL and stay there as he scored 20 last season.
